Bets van Jaarsveld

Bets has spent her life serving other people. After 40 years of a successful career in the defence force, she began to feel a strong calling to provide support for the many victims of trauma she witnessed after joining the victim support unit in Linden, Johannesburg. As a first responder, she was struck by the lack of sufficient resources and follow-up support for those suffering from the after-effects of trauma. She wanted to make a difference. Help them heal and recover. Help them not only tell their story, but transform it into something inspiring and filled with hope and renewal.

Inspired by this vision, Bets set about equipping herself with the tools she needed to pursue her dream of offering this valuable service to those in need.  In 2018 she started studying trauma in-depth, working her way through courses with Udemy, TIRA (Traumatic Incident Reduction Association, USA) and Floamotion.

She is now a registered member of TIRA-SA as well as TIRA in America and divides her time between her private practice and Victim Support and the CPF - Community Police Forum of South Africa. Her toolkit comprises a broad range of skillsets, ranging from the psychological and emotional aspects of counselling, all the way to the legal and more technical aspects of victim recovery and empowerment. She has been using TIR successfully over the past few years and has become very involved in trauma work. She is often called in to do group debriefings in a variety of circumstances ranging from armed robberies to hijacking, rape, suicide GBV (Gender-based violence). In her own words: “If I can make a difference in just one person’s life, I will be happy!”
